We produce high-quality eyewear. While we aim to make a profit, we are not afraid to make a loss. We are constantly thinking about how to produce excellent frames.
This motto has guided the MASUNAGA factory employees since the beginning and still forms the basis of their code of conduct today. In 1905, he recruited skilled craftsmen from Osaka and Tokyo to work in Fukui, with the ambition of becoming a leader in the production of the highest quality eyewear. To raise production standards, he introduced a guild-like system in which master craftsmen could set up their own businesses, competing against each other and training more craftsmen. As a result, the Fukui region is now renowned for producing the finest eyewear. MASUNAGA has been taking care of the eyesight and frame design of Japan's most important family ever since it designed eyewear for the imperial family in 1933.
Today, MASUNAGA is both a factory and a luxury brand. It produces perfect eyewear, the creation of which requires as many as 400 steps, including 200 precise manual processes. This is an extremely time-consuming process for the craftsmen involved. The end result, however, is a true work of art. The company remains a family business, managed by the fifth generation of the MASUNAGA family. The factory employs 170 people, and the brand has five flagship stores in Japan.
